Damage done by alcohol or drug addiction to the brains of the elderly aging addicts can be compared to that of Alzheimer’s, according to Dr. Harold Urschel, Chief Medical Strategist for Enterhealth. In an interview with QUARTZ, Dr. Urschel explains both alcohol and drug addictions are chronic, medical diseases of the brain, but with the right treatment program based upon National Institute of Health research, the patient’s brain function can return within four to 18 months of stopping the chemical abuse.
