Treatments for Drug and Alcohol Addiction

There are nearly as many types of drug and alcohol addiction treatment options available today as there are types of people in need of care. From private, in-home, addiction care, to outpatient and inpatient addiction treatment programs, you will find addiction therapy programs that fit your lifestyle and your pocketbook.  Here are some of the key questions to ask as you evaluate a treatment program.

The Top Ten Things You Should Ask When Considering a Treatment Program or Facility

1. Is the program an evidence-based, medically driven drug or alcohol rehab program or one based solely on faith and willpower?

2. Does the program incorporate key assessments such as dual diagnosis and neuro-psychological testing?

3. Do they offer anti-addiction medicines combined with disease-focused treatment such as motivational interviewing, broad spectrum treatment and/or neuro-therapy?

4. Does the program offer key behavioral therapies such as intensive individual, group and family with full-time addiction therapists on staff?  How many times a week do they receive individual therapy? At what point in the treatment do they begin to engage the family?

5. Does the program treat the "whole" person by devoting time to teaching life skills, exploring spirituality/12-step, improving stress reduction, and learning nutrition/wellness?

6. How many addiction trained PHD's do they have on staff full-time?  How many are on-site at any given time?

7. For residential treatment, do they have a 24-hour-a-day nursing staff?

8.  What is the staff-to-patient ratio average?

9. What is the recommended length of stay and why?

10. Does the treatment program support the patient across a continuum of care including things like transitional living, outpatient therapies, social network support, and/or online recovery tools?
